D.C. SWAT to YAL: “You don’t have free speech.”

Visit the Young American’s for Liberty website here.

That’s pretty ridiculous, although not at all uncommon here in the “land of the free”. Our government, or some members of it to be fair, are more concerned with calling on foreign governments to make sure their citizens can protest and riot/break stuff freely, than they are with making sure American’s can protest peacefully. The full text of the 1st Amendment, the first of the Bill of Rights is as follows:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

In this case you have people exercising their right to free speech AND to peaceably assemble, being told that they cannot do so without a permit. The Constitution makes no mention of needing a permit to exercise these rights. When you need a permit to do something you supposedly have a right to, it means it’s no longer a right. It’s a privilege only if you have the proper paper work.
